Palm procession

Villagers parade through Alvechurch to mark the start of Easter week.

Motorists making their way through Alvechurch on Palm Sunday might have been surprised to see “Jesus” (villager Tim Reading) leading a procession along Swan Street, accompanied by a pair of donkeys.

In an event organised by the local churches, more than 100 people of all ages braved the chilly weather to join church members and Alvechurch Community Choir on the route from Sandhills Nursery to the precinct, waving palms and singing hymns.

The procession successfully navigated the narrow pavements and busy traffic of Swan Street to arrive safely in the precinct where there were more songs from the choir and a short act of worship led by Revd Fiona Lee of Alvechurch Baptist Church.

There were also donkey rides for the children, while The Lounge was open for much-needed refreshments.

The event was part of the wider “Alvechurch Arise” project to commemorate Easter – click here for more.
