Alvechurch amateur weatherman Phil Thomas records the changes.
August was a very warm and sunny month, with 111 hours of sunshine up to the 17th – that’s 74% of the entire month’s sunshine.
It was also a very dry month on the whole, although the rain was setting in as we went to press. Most of the rain had been on the 1st of the month with only 0.4mm over two days since then.
So, warm, dry and sunny – just like summer!

The first couple of weeks in July were cool, but quite dry with very little rainfall – only 5.9mm over the first 14 days. From the 14th onwards, temperatures started climbing rapidly with a daytime screen maximum of 31.8c on the 19th.
This was matched by very warm and humid nights with an overnight minimum of 21.1c on the 20th – this being the highest minimum recorded in more than 30 years locally.
It was very dry overall, with only 24.1mm of rainfall: 39% of the local 30-year mean.

Outlook
The summer has ended with temperatures around normal for this area. Computer models seem to suggest that the weather into September may remain on the dry side.
This level of certainty is low, however. The high pressure needed to sustain the dry weather only has to move a little further south, and we’d be back into changeable and windy weather.
