As Hopwood Village Hall celebrates its 100th birthday, plans are underway to revitalise the building and ensure its future.
The hall, which opened on May 20, 1914, was built in memory of Hopwood resident Mr F J Batchelor and given to the local community, and has been hosting local events and societies ever since.
However, the building is now in need of serious refurbishment, and a new committee – headed by Peter Joannides of Hopwood Garden Centre – has been formed to take care of the immediate and long-term future.
The committee aims to have a structural survey carried out before prioritising the work that needs to be done.
In the meantime, they will be clearing overgrown vegetation and overhanging tree branches, and putting down a surface behind the building for extra car parking.
The group will then apply for funding and grants from the relevant bodies.
An Open Day to mark the centenary and the start of the renovations has been planned for September.
