Cover, Sept 2003

The summer of 2003 must have been a pretty warm one because we captioned our cover photo dramatically as: “The heat of summer begins its slow fade towards autumn on the slopes of the Arrow Valley”.

Were we more poetic in those days?

This picture caused some recent debate when we substituted it for another image in our Village Walks Calendar 2013, but left the caption saying: “Cornfield in Alvechurch”.

Clearly the rolls in the foreground are hay, but is that a cornfield just over the hedge? Perhaps we should have stuck with the “heat of summer . . !”

ALSO IN THE NEWS:

* Barnt Green businesses resurrected the village’s Chamber of Trade to give them a united voice amid fears that new bollards and parking restrictions would hit their livelihoods.

* In Alvechurch more than 100 villagers packed a public meeting protesting at plans to build on the area, known simply as The Field, between Blythesway and Withybed Lane.

* Members of the Building Committee, set up by the governors of St Andrew’s School, Barnt Green, celebrated completion of a new £150,000 classroom.

* Optometrist John Mason (right, with receptionist Annette Lewis) celebrated his first year in Alvechurch.
