The speed limit through much of Cofton Hackett has been reduced to 30mph – but motorists might not notice.
And it is feared the list of other road safety work for Barnt Green Road, outlined in a letter to residents in September 2011 by Worcestershire County Council, has been binned.
Two 30mph signs materialised on the road last month, just south of Reservoir Road, for drivers heading towards Birmingham on the B4120.
But at the other end, motorists coming from Birmingham could easily think it is still 40mph from the Rose Hill roundabout because there are no new 30mph signs to alert them.
As for the other necessary work to emerge from a Speed Limit Review of the road to “give support to pedestrians and also to vehicles emerging from side roads and driveways”, the county councillor for the area, Peter McDonald, said the council had cut it from its plans.
“Once the county council kicked in with their major cutbacks, there wasn’t even going to be a 30mph speed limit here,” he explained.
“But after some heated meetings in Worcester, I at least got them to honour the 30mph limit.
“They are cutting back on promises made throughout the county and don’t give a hoot about letters that went out to residents.
“But the only way to make the speed limit work is to have the engineering works they promised,” said Coun McDonald. “I can’t promise anything now, but I can promise that I will not let it go,” he added.
Meanwhile, the limit along the section of the B4120 which curves around the Bittell reservoirs has been reduced from the national speed limit to 40mph – which is now the maximum permitted speed along the whole length of the “back route” through the Village area between Redditch and south Birmingham.
