Allotments quest comes to fruition

-

Would-be gardeners will at last have somewhere to grow their veg thanks to an Alvechurch Parish Council deal to provide allotments.

After years of searching, the council has announced plans for up to 40 “mini-plots” on land bordering Old Rectory Lane, between the road and the school playing fields.

These will be the first allotments in the parish since the plots in School Lane, while still believed to be designated as allotments, became too expensive to be viable for most gardeners.

It is thought the parish council plots will cost in the region of £25 a year.

The council is hoping to have around 30 plots ready for use in the autumn, with the possibility of creating another 10, depending on how much land is available after it is cleared.

It has around 20 people already on a waiting list, but any other Alvechurch parishioner interested in renting a plot should contact the clerk, Yvonne Goode, on 0121 447 8016.

* As The Village went to press, the parish council was due to discuss a proposal for a village bicycle scheme.
