Travel writer heads for Chernobyl

Finstall travel writer Nigel Roberts

Finstall travel writer Nigel Roberts is heading into the Chernobyl radiation zone this month to work with severely disabled children in Belarus.

Nigel, who has just been commissioned by Bradt Travel Guides to write the second edition of his Guide to Belarus, will be visiting with fellow charity trustee David Tee to increase capacity at the grimly named Children’s Correction Centre in the town of Vetka.

The centre offers support to children with a range of severe mental and physical disabilities and their families, but it is chronically under-resourced and the building is in need of major works of repair.

Nigel told The Village: “I’ve spent a lot of time travelling around Belarus since 2001; the people there think they are the forgotten ones of Europe, and in many ways they are right. Since the Chernobyl catastrophe and the break-up of the old Soviet Union, much-needed resources have been in short supply.”
