Train of the future takes a test run

There was great excitement among rail enthusiasts when the prototype replacement train for the Cross-City line stopped off at village stations.
The new West Midlands Railway Class 730 Aventra made its debut run down the branch line to Redditch and back, stopping at Barnt Green and Alvechurch, on March 15.
Manufactured by Bombadier in Derby, these trains will eventually replace the existing Class 323 units, built almost 30 years ago.
Barnt Green Parish Council heard that the problem of “rail squeal” was still evident as the new train pulled into their station from the south.
Coun Charlie Hotham said that arriving from Birmingham, the train was very quiet and they were “euphoric”. But this was shattered 20 minutes later when the train reappeared from the south and the squeal “was as bad as any squeal”, and there was also a “thumping”. He has passed on a recording of the squeal to be studied by the train manufacturers and by Worcestershire Regulatory Services.
“We can’t have a whole lot of new trains that still squeal,” he said.
* The council heard that preparatory work on the lifts for Barnt Green station was progressing.
