Incredible start for veg project

The Incredible Edible project in Alvechurch, which sees volunteers planting produce in the village for all to share, has enjoyed a very successful first year.

Founder Tim Reading installed the first raised bed in Tanyard Lane car park last summer: “It was very hot, so watering the plants was a labour of love. It soon became my favourite time of day, as I’d meet local folk who shared their own growing stories and aspirations for the future.”

The precinct was chosen as the next location for raised beds, which were installed after a year’s consultation with Geoff Hall from the Bernard Piggott Trust.

“The location is amazing, not only due to the amount of footfall but also its micro-climate – a walled garden that basks all day in the sunshine,” says Tim.

“The plants have taken well, partly down to good soil and partly because they respond to love. Thank you to all who helped contribute.”

The plan is to plant the whole of the border to give local organic and seasonal food. For now, villagers can help themselves to anything that is ready. Most plants are ”cut and come again”, meaning that if you take leaves from the outside of the plant it will carry on producing from its heart.

Incredible Edible Alvechurch meets on the second Wednesday each month at The Weighbridge at 7.30pm – all are welcome. Keep an eye out for planting party dates, on Facebook or in the precinct.
