The bright side of Brexit?

Billy Brexit plays to the large crowd outside The Crown

Villagers gathered in Alvechurch on New Year’s Day for the annual Mummers’ Play and Morris dancing.

As well as traditional characters such as St George, Sweet Moll, Old Father Time and a dragon made up of local children, the Mummers’ Play always features some newsworthy figures for the crowds to cheer or jeer.

This year’s offering outside The Crown at Withybed Green included a waistcoat-clad Gareth Southgate, a housing developer in a hard hat (plenty of boos for him) and a Russian tourist come to visit the village’s church tower, armed with a bottle of poison – plus a revolving door of Brexit Ministers.

There was also Morris dancing in The Square from Alvechurch Morris and Aelfgythe Women’s Border Morris, plus visiting sides.
