Peter in the garden

Alvechurch resident Peter McHugh, who for many years has looked after the small garden behind the dentists’ practice as well as the hedge across the road from the Chinese takeaway, would like to pass on both jobs to a willing volunteer.

Peter, a former parish councillor, decided to tidy up the garden in 2009, constructing pathways and planting various flowers. “I never asked permission, but nobody told me to stop!” he recalls.

The garden later became a memorial to village teacher Pete Rippington (“Mr Rip”), who was killed in a school coach crash in France in 2012.

Now aged 82, Peter would like to hand over to someone else “as I am starting to feel my age.”
