Relatives and milestone

A new milestone commemorating the life and work of a local historian was unveiled at Tardebigge on the towpath of The Worcester & Birmingham Canal.

The Rev Alan White, who died last year at the age of 98, was for many years the historian for The Worcester-Birmingham & Droitwich Canals Society, and also wrote books including Chronicles of the Cut, containing 30 years of research.

He also served as Priest-in-Charge of Tardebigge parish, through which the canal runs.

Relatives from three generations of Alan’s family attended the ceremony, along with friends from the canal society and the local community. After the unveiling, everyone enjoyed refreshments on the Society’s narrowboat, Cecilia.

The sandstone milestone is just south of bridge 56, a few yards along from Tardebigge Top Lock 58.
