Weekend of community spirit

Maureen and Jeanette

Barnt Green’s inaugural Community Weekend raised £5,000 for local charities and provided visitors from the village and beyond with a great day out.

The event, organised by resident Rachel Banner with help from neighbour Maureen Frowley and the parish council, featured open gardens, a duck hunt, an art exhibition and a flower show.

As well as getting a sneak peek at local gardens, visitors flocked to St Andrew’s Church for the Flower Festival, while Barnt Green Art Club showed off their talents at the Friends’ Meeting House.

Meanwhile, the Hewell Road shops were decked out in patriotic colours – the winners of the window display competition, judged by residents from Rose Court, were Oasis Flowers, Alan Morris Estate Agents and the Acorns charity shop.

“It was a very happy weekend – everyone was walking round with smiles on their faces and meeting neighbours they hadn’t met before,” says Rachel.

The proceeds will be divided between the Basement Project, Where Next Association and Barnt Green Day Centre.
