A very handy achievement

Toby

Sarah Rees reports from the Oakalls and Parklands . . .

An eleven-year-old boy from The Oakalls demonstrated his impressive gymnastic skills when he walked 400 metres on his hands, as part of the Sport Relief Mile.

Toby Uren, a pupil at Aston Fields Middle School, completed the distance in 35 minutes, spurred on by cheers from his mum, dad and younger brother, Adam.

He was one of more than 100 people who took part in the walking event at the Ryland Centre on New Road, Bromsgrove.

“I did it because I’ve got the ability to do it following years of gymnastics training,” said Toby, pictured above. ”I wanted to help Sport Relief as well.”

Toby has been attending a gymnastics club since the age of four. In 2013 he progressed from club grade to national grade and now trains three times a week at the Earls Gymnastics Club in Halesowen.

However, he admits the upside-down walk was harder than he had anticipated and said he couldn’t do it again!

Maimee Morris, fitness and building supervisor at the Ryland Centre, said: “It was definitely harder than we all thought originally but Toby did so well – it was great to watch.”

Toby raised more than £300 for Sport Relief in donations from family, friends and people at the Centre.

GOING FOR GOLD
Another gymnast from the estate is celebrating a personal achievement, having won two gold medals at The George Finney regional championships in Stoke on Trent.

Oscar Rees, aged nine (pictured right), won individual gold and team gold in the Under 11 Mixed Beginners group. He has been attending Bromsgrove Gymnastics Club for the past three years.

CLEAN FOR THE QUEEN
Residents are invited to take part in the national “Clean for the Queen” campaign, by helping to clear litter on the estate on Sunday May 15 between 11am and 12.30pm.

Those wishing to take part should gather on the open grassed area in Royal Worcester Crescent by the notice board and post box. Bromsgrove District Council will be providing litter picking equipment and special bags.

Coun Caroline Spencer said: “We are very fortunate to live in a beautiful part of our county but sadly we still get litter thrown on our roads, footpaths and in the brooks – so let’s make the estate sparkle!”

To ensure there is sufficient equipment on the day, please let Coun Spencer know if you plan to take part,  via the estate’s Facebook page, on 01527 832414 or .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)
