County poll leaves seats unchanged

-

There were no surprises in the Village area elections to Worcestershire County Council – although UKIP and the Independent candidate gave the sitting Tories a wake-up call in Alvechurch.

In the results announced this afternoon, Tories June Griffiths and Kit Taylor won Alvechurch and Bromsgrove East respectively, while Labour’s Peter McDonald beat off the Conservative challenge to his representation of Beacon division.

It was a close run tussle in Alvechurch where Coun Griffiths got 709 votes (30 per cent of the turnout), with Julie Flynn, of UKIP taking 632 votes and Independent candidate Terry Coney 596. The other three candidates were some way behind.

In Beacon, which covers Lickey, Cofton Hackett, Barnt Green and Rubery, Peter McDonald received 1,374 votes (47 per cent), holding the Tory challenger Richard Deeming (1,035) at bay by a margin of more than 300 votes.

Meanwhile, Conservative Kit Taylor won Bromsgrove East, which includes Blackwell, Burcot, Finstall, Aston Fields and Tardebigge with 952 votes (39 per cent of the turnout).

UKIP did well in that division, too, polling 638 votes (26 per cent), reflecting the party’s rise across the county with just over 20 per cent of the total vote – second to the Tories’ 33 Per cent and one per cent higher than Labour.
