Without wishing to sound like a spoilsport, on a recent holiday in the Caribbean, I noticed a very large number of the African snails similar to those which a young girl keeps as pets mentioned The Village.
One of the locals on the island informed me that these breed in such numbers, and grow to such a large size, that they are now a real pest and are starting to devastate the crops on which the island depends, because of their voracious appetite for vegetation. My granddaughter was told to wash her hands after touching one in case of transporting any eggs unwittingly on her hand.
All I am saying is, beware of interesting new pets, sometimes they can have more of an impact than initially realised. The island of my holiday faces ruin because of these snails.
