My friend Syd

May I pay tribute to Alvechurch parish councillor Syd Caddick, who has died suddenly.

On the morning of his death he was in the parish office and we were laughing and joking. Then just after lunch I saw Sgt Ben Hembury talking to the parish clerk, who was in tears. The shock I had when they told me about Syd, I can’t explain – I felt as if I was in a dream.

With our similar interests, including both of us being big Blues fans, Syd had become one of my best mates. Of all the parish councillors I have worked with I can honestly say he was the best.

If you wanted something doing, “Ask Syd” . . . and you knew he would do his best for you and usually get it done – although progress with traffic calming was always frustrating for him.

Syd and I always spent Sunday morning down at The Meadows supervising work by the probation service – last Sunday I felt very lost without him.

We have lost a true gent of a man, who can never be replaced and who will never be forgotten.
