Redemption on a plate

Cafe diners

There’s a new place to eat in Alvechurch – thanks to the film The Shawshank Redemption.

The Ark Café is now open every Thursday at the new church hall, offering teacakes and coffee in the morning followed by a full lunch menu served at your table by a team of volunteers.

Organiser Pat Booth told The Village the idea came from the Lent 2005 discussion groups that took place in Alvechurch.

“We watched The Shawshank Redemption and prisoner Andy’s letter-writing over a period of six years to obtain library facilities for his fellow inmates.

We were then asked to consider what action we could take on behalf of our community. The answer is in the new and exciting café at The Ark.”

The café is open each Thursday from 11am-noon for coffee and from noon-2.30pm for lunch.

“We will endeavour to use local suppliers for our food and will support Fairtrade. It is intended that the Ark Café will compliment existing facilities in the village,” Pat added.

The Village dropped in to the inaugural lunch and was very impressed by the use of The Ark and the quality of the food and service – at prices that probably make it cheaper than cooking for yourself.
