Educational fund available

-

More than 200 years ago a Trust was established in the ecclesiastical Parish of Alvechurch and Barnt Green to administer the Poor Laws for the needy of the parish.

The Trust subsequently turned into the Alvechurch Grammar School to provide an education for children in that parish and the school was located in the building that is now the Post Office in Bear Hill, Alvechurch.

In 1892 it was decided to close down the school and the children were sent instead to the King Edward’s Foundation Schools in Birmingham.

The money realised from the closure of the school was put into an endowment fund to provide funds for educational purposes for any young person under the age of 25 years, resident within the parish.

The Trust still continues to flourish and much of the money is invested to provide an annual income, which is given out in the form of grants for educational purposes to applicants who can demonstrate a need.

Because of the history of the Trust, the area of the ecclesiastical parish rather than the modern parish boundaries governs the area of the Trust.

Broadly speaking, these boundaries are Hopwood, Rowney Green, Alvechurch and Barnt Green, only up to the railway line. The land beyond the railway line is excluded.

The Governors are appointed by the three schools in the area, Alvechurch Parish Council, The King Edward’s Foundation and Worcester County Council. Two additional Governors are co-opted from local people.

The Governors meet three times per year and welcome applications from individuals within the catchment area and also youth organisations that operate within the same area.

Application forms can be obtained from the Clerk to the Governors, whose details are given below.

Applications should be submitted by January 1, May 1 and September 1 each year. Evidence of need is incorporated into the application form.
