Many Cofton residents still on the look-out

-

I always look forward to my copy of The Village which is read from cover to cover. It was good for Cofton Hackett to get a mention in the June edition, but I feel the need to correct a statement.

At present there are only three co-ordinators for the Neighbourhood Watch scheme but it is incorrect to say there are only three members. Many residents are interested, responsible security conscious neighbours who “look out” for each other.

I was responsible for setting up, with help from the local police, the original Watch about 17 years ago. At that time there were 49 co-ordinators covering virtually the whole of the Parish from Parsonage Drive to Kendal End Road and involving more than 700 houses. Over the years some co-ordinators have moved to pastures new, some feel too old to be actively involved and sadly, quite a few have died.

Yes, Cofton Hackett is experiencing problems with young people in Cofton Park and the Myhill Field.

Yes, meetings have been held for the public with the Parish Council. West Midlands and West Mercia police have attended and much discussion has taken place.

Yes, plans are afoot to revitalise the Watch. I sincerely hope more people will come forward to play a more active role and urge them to contact PC Jayne Heraty, Rubery Police Station, New Road, Rubery. Telephone: 08457 444888 extension 3120.

Also, in the article Village Memoirs the writer tells of returning home via Cofton Church Lane and “The Stocking”. This is the bridle path from the end of Chestnut Drive to Cofton Church Lane and should correctly be called “The Stocken”.
