High tea to fund smart toilets

An Oakalls resident is organising a “High Tea” event in Alvechurch to raise money for a Kenyan school.

Alison Halford was inspired by a group of New Zealand women who hosted a similar event for the Akamba Children’s Education Fund (ACEF), which supports Brainhouse Academy – located in one of the world’s largest slums just outside Nairobi.

The High Tea on Sunday May 13 will raise funds for ACEF’s Dignity campaign, which is planning to build innovative bio-gas toilets at the school to help minimise disease and polluted water.

The toilets collect the liquid and solid waste separately and turn them into bio-gas to fuel cooking facilities at the school. There will also be washing facilities for girls to take care of their menstrual hygiene.

The project also aims to provide menstrual cups for all female pupils, many of whom miss school when they are on their periods.

Alison’s event takes place from 3–5pm at the Ark, St Laurence Church, Alvechurch. She is appealing for up to 20 villagers to host a table, with each inviting up to seven friends to enjoy High Tea. There will be plenty of information about the projects as well as quizzes, raffles and other activities.

“At the end, your guests will be invited to donate the amount that they might expect to pay for an Afternoon Tea,” says Alison. “I’m hoping this will be in excess of £10 per guest, so that we can fund one complete toilet, maybe even two!”
