The village green in Alvechurch where the Remembrance service always takes place was looking in tip-top condition this year, thanks to the hard work of parish councillor Alan Helmore and his wife Linda (right).
“For many years the area had been lovingly cared for by a local WI group, but the plants suffered in last year’s long hot summer and the WI gardeners found it difficult to keep them alive,” says fellow parish councillor Andy Humphries.
”Linda and Alan persuaded the parish council that the green needed a facelift, so we helped pay for new plants.”
The Helmores then rolled up their sleeves, prepared the ground and planted a range of low-growing and low maintenance flowering shrubs, just in time for November 11.
