A host of Alvechurch groups and institutions are celebrating milestones this year, with special events taking place across the village.

In March, Alvechurch Community Choir marked its 10th birthday with a special cake, made by member Diana Abraham and shared – along with some bubbly – at a Monday night practice in the Village Hall. Mary Green also read one of her poems for the occasion.

A few weeks later there were big celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the Worcester-Birmingham & Droitwich Canal Society, held at The Crown Inn, Withybed Green where the group was first formed in 1969.

Live music, boat rides and falconry were some of the attractions on the day, and more pictures from the event will appear in next month’s Village.

Later this month it’s the turn of Alvechurch Women’s Institute, which has been going for 90 years. The group will celebrate on May 13 with a tea party in their meeting place of Alvechurch Village Hall – which also has its 90th birthday this year and hosts a party on May 5.

The hall will be the venue for yet another party when Alvechurch Village Society marks its 50th anniversary on June 26 – full details have yet to be announced.

Finally, the Alvechurch Border Morris side will have been dancing for 30 years this summer, and will be holding an anniversary event – again, we will bring you more information next month!
