A look back at what was happening around here in March 2009.

Our March 2009 cover image was taken by photographer Gareth Thomas, whose pictures illustrated a new edition of AE Housman’s A Shropshire Lad for the poet’s 150th birthday. Inside was a feature on Housman.

Work had begun to build the new Barnt Green Scout & Guide Hut, although fundraisers still needed an extra £170,000 to complete the project.

In Alvechurch, lots in a charity auction included use of a “priceless” parking bay for the summer term at Crown Meadow First School.

Members of Barnt Green Choral Society, gearing up for their spring concert, told The Village about the benefits of singing together, which the choir had been doing since 1951.

Over in Alvechurch, a new community choir had formed, launched by US gospel and jazz singer Lillian Boutté during a UK visit.

Two village runners were preparing for the London Marathon, inspired by father-in-law Roger Green (centre, with his guide dog Irvin) to raise funds for charities that help the blind. Andy Scarle (left), of Cofton Hackett, and Lee Lawrance, of Bromsgrove, were both members of Barnt Green Chuggers.
