As Singletons Nurseries marks its 70th birthday, the owners are making sure their celebrations will also benefit charity.

The family-run business, based at Lydiate Ash near Bromsgrove, will host a Red Balloon Ball on Saturday September 16, raising money for Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

The event will take place in an elegant Capris Marquee at Bellevue, next to 594 Birmingham Road, Lydiate Ash.

Guests will enjoy a three-course meal with wine, fully licensed bar, and live entertainment including a professional magician, salsa dancing with John James Salsa, and local band On The Raggedy Edge.

On The Raggedy Edge was officially branded as the Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity Band, with band members drawn from hospital staff and friends. They have played for the BCH Annual
Revue for the past 10 years.

However, due to popular demand the band now also play other gigs. Their distinctive “brassy” style of cover tunes includes rock, blues, pop and dance tunes from across the ages.

There will also be a DJ playing music till late, plus a charity auction and raffle. Guests are invited to wear something red. Tickets for the ball cost £65 per person, or £600 for a table of ten.

Claire Singleton says: “We have a strong connection with the Birmingham Children’s Hospital, having handling grounds maintenance there for the past 25 years.

“We have also helped with a number of gardening projects and seen first-hand how beneficial these projects have been for the children at the hospital.”

Over the past few years Singletons Nurseries has raised more than £14,000 for Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

In 2015 Claire and husband John were part of a team of volunteers who helped organise a charity ball at the Birmingham Hyatt to raise money for the children’s play area and the brain injury unit at the hospital. The event raised £7,835.

And in February 2016, John hosted a fundraising party for his 65th birthday and raised £800.

70 Years in Business
Singletons Nurseries was established in 1947 by brothers Charles and Jack Kinder. The original business started as Kinder Brothers at Harborne Lane Nurseries.

The brothers mainly grew exhibition chrysanthemums, vegetable plants and bedding plants.

The business developed when the brothers bought a shop in Northfield for their sister Emma Peggy Singleton – John’s mother.

When he left school John trained at Pershore Horticultural College, before taking over the work of his uncles and renaming the garden centre Singletons, after his father Lionel Singleton.

The business moved to its current location in 2001 and now sits on 11 acres of land. Expansion has included more commercial growing, landscaping, and the opening of The Potting Shed Café in 2016.
