Whether you need to keep livestock corralled or just want your boundary to look tidier, a traditionally-laid hedge provides a sturdy and natural-looking solution – and this is the ideal time of year to call in the expert.

Julian Smith, who recently moved to Alvechurch from his native Gloucestershire, has more than 20 years’ experience in hedge laying, having been taught by a renowned local craftsman.

He is accredited by the National Hedge Laying Society and competes regularly in the society’s hedge-laying championships.

“l’ll happily work for anyone with a hedge, not just farmers – and I can tackle any shape or size of hedge,” says Julian, who has also taught hedge-laying courses.

Hedge styles vary enormously by region, and Julian specialises in the “Berkeley” style, named after the aristocratic family who insisted that hedges on their land be built without stakes so as not to harm horses when out hunting.

Instead the branches have to be woven together, which makes the hedge very strong. However, Julian can also carry out other styles if required.

“You’re really making a living fence, which rejuvenates the ancient root system and is beneficial to wildlife as well as keeping livestock safe.”

Prime hedge-laying season runs from roughly mid-November till the end of March, but outside of those times Julian still works with wood – keeping busy with his original trade of carpentry and joinery.

He is a member of the Guild of Master Craftsmen for both trades.
