Excellence and accessibility

-

King Edward’s boasts exceptional exam results and a wide range of extra-curricular activities.

King Edward’s School, Birmingham, has been one of the best academic schools in the country for over a century and in 2008 previous records were broken in every year group. 73 per cent of boys achieved an A grade at A level and 63 per cent gained an A* at GCSE.

“These are truly exceptional results,” said Chief Master John Claughton, “achieved by boys who are also doing an extraordinary range of other things. They reflect not only hard work but the wonderful relationships that this school engenders.”

Excellence is obviously one goal of this school, but so is accessibility. The school is also striving hard to ensure that these opportunities are available to all able boys, whatever the financial situation of their parents.
The school has extended and will continue to extend the provision of Assisted Places, funded by the King Edward’s Foundation and the generosity of former pupils, and 30 per cent of boys have some form of fee reduction, with 10 per cent having entirely free places.

Another major change is the intention to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma to the Sixth Form from September 2010. King Edward’s is the first major independent school in this country to introduce the international Baccalaureate Diploma and cease teaching A Levels at the same time.

“This is a historic change for King Edward’s School,” said John Claughton. “We believe that, with its breadth, its freedom and its recognition of all aspects of a pupil’s education, it will provide the right challenge for the boys that we have in this school.”
