New schools ready for March handover

-

The £8 million project to build a new middle school for pupils from much of The Village area will be completed this month on schedule.

Contractors HBG are on course to hand over the buildings, which also include a new first school for Alvechurch, on March 10.

The schools are due to move everything over from their current site to the new buildings on Birmingham Road over the Easter holidays.

Then the school buildings on Tanyard Lane, which have served the villages for the past 30 years, will be demolished. It is believed the new owner of that site, Persimmon Homes, will be seeking outline planning permission for development.

Worcestershire County Council has said the schools will be a facility for everyone – “not a community centre, but very much for use by the community”.

Among the facilities which will be available for hire is a multi-use games arena, or MUGA – of the kind which is controversially also being considered for either The Meadows or Swanslength playing fields.

Bromsgrove District Council has sent out consultation letters to 1,600 homes in Alvechurch asking where they would prefer it to be sited.

Alvechurch Parish Council has voted to “support in principle” a MUGA in the village, but rejected The Meadows as a site.

Parish councillors are now asking if it might instead be possible to use the £50,000 earmarked to build a MUGA to enter into a long-term deal to use the one at the new school.
