Village plea: Help us raise the roof

Rowney Green residents are calling on neighbouring villages to help them to win £80,000 in a TV vote.

The village will be appearing on ITV in November competing against one other good cause.

If they win, the cash will be used towards a new pitched roof in place of the high-maintenance flat roof at the Memorial Peace Hall, which is the hub of village life for Rowney Green.

Organiser Pauline Knight told The Village they had been accepted into the People’s Millions compeition, which finds causes for Big Lottery funding, because the hall is used so much.

“To win the money, we have to get more votes than the other cause. To get the votes, we have to promote our cause to as many people as possible before the event, and get them to vote for us on the day,” she explained.

Two causes a night will be pitched against each other on Central News for four nights in the week beginning November 26. The cause with the most votes on each day wins £80,000.

“We don’t know which day we will be televised or who we will be against,” said Pauline. “However, voting lines are open 6am-10pm on the day and we want to encourage up to six calls from each telephone. Calls cost 10p each.

“If anyone feels they can help on the day, particularly making sure that everyone in their part of the parish knows the telephone number for the Rowney Green bid, please call Pauline on 0121 447 7082 or Maurice Kenny on 01527 66071.

“One of the most important aspects of the campaign will be to get the telephone number out to as many people as possible as early as possible,” Pauline explained.

“One solution will be email. If you want to receive the telephone number via email on the day please email Pauline at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) so that an email including the telephone number can be sent to you early on the voting day.”

The hall is nearly 50 years old and is used for more than 600 events annually.
